Create a project

Select your board, configure a firmware project and verify the initial build with the project wizard.

BMI270 driver tutorial · Part 1 of 5The running example: an M5Stack CoreS3 reading its built-in Bosch BMI270 motion sensor over I2C. Choose your tool below and every step and clip follows it.

What you will build

Across five short parts you write a driver for the Bosch BMI270 motion sensor built into an M5Stack CoreS3, then check its acceleration and rotation readings on the board. Each part shows the same step in Flash IDE, Flash CLI and Flash for VS Code.

  • An M5Stack CoreS3. Its ESP32-S3 USB port gives you serial and JTAG, so no external probe is needed.
  • The BMI270 accelerometer and gyroscope is already on the board, on its internal I2C bus: nothing to wire.
  • A USB-C cable that carries data.
Keep in mind
Using other hardware? The steps are the same; only the board and part names change.

Run the project wizard

The wizard walks through the target, environment, application and review. Flash IDE starts with a Project stage to choose firmware, hardware or both. Nothing is created until you confirm the review. The CoreS3 is built around an ESP32-S3, so that is the target you pick.

Create and build an ESP32-S3 firmware project in Flash IDE

In Flash IDE

  1. On the start screen, choose Create project.
  2. Project: select Firmware, name the project bmi270-driver and choose its parent folder.
  3. Firmware: filter the boards with esp32s, pick ESP32-S3 and the ESP-IDF native profile.
  4. Environment: keep Use detected installation. The recording uses ESP-IDF 5.4.1 and shows all seven tools ready.
  5. Application: keep Minimal, C, Default, Existing installation and Single application.
  6. Review: check the destination, board and SDK. Leave Build once to verify enabled and choose Create & verify. Once the build passes, choose Open project.

If the SDK is missing

The recordings use an SDK that is already installed. If yours is missing, review the setup plan in Environment before installing tools. You can also create the files only and build later.

Check the result

All three videos finish with the minimal project built and opened. A passing build confirms that the generated firmware compiles for the selected target with your SDK and toolchain. It does not test the board: adding the BMI270 driver, flashing and checking sensor readings come later in this tutorial.

The result is a normal ESP-IDF project, which you can also build without Flash. Next, run /init in its Flash chat; this step is not shown in these clips.

Then, in the new project
/init
