Getting started
Which Flash fits your work?
Three tools, one agent. Choose by what you build and where you like to work; the project stays the same in every tool.
Start from what you do
Hardware + firmware
You design the board and write its firmware
Electronics engineers who draw the schematic, lay out the PCB, bring the board up and write the code that runs on it.
- Board and code in one app. Schematic, PCB and BOM editors sit next to the firmware, in the same project.
- An agent that sees both sides. It follows nets from MCU pins to parts and updates the schematic and the pin map together.
- Design and validate your board. Pick parts with their datasheets, then build, program and debug the board you just designed.
Firmware
You write firmware for a board
Firmware and embedded engineers who write drivers and applications, often for a board someone else designed.
- Keep your setup. Flash for VS Code adds the agent to your editor; your extensions and key bindings stay as they are.
- See the board without KiCad. Open the schematic, PCB and BOM next to your code to check a pinout or follow a net.
- Build, flash and debug in one place. Flash Monitor has the build, the debugger, serial, MQTT and Bluetooth LE.
Prefer a dedicated app? Flash IDE gives you the same, plus the hardware editor for when you need to change the board.
Terminal, lab and CI
You work in the terminal, the lab or CI
Engineers who live in the shell, work over SSH on the machine the boards are plugged into, or automate builds and checks.
- The full agent in any terminal. Local or over SSH, with panels for the build, the board and its debug output.
- The design without a viewer. The agent reads the schematic and PCB, and
flash hardwareinspects them as JSON. - Commands for scripts and CI. Create, import and build projects and validate the design, with machine-readable output.
What each tool gives you
| Capability | Flash IDE | Flash for VS Code | Flash CLI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Desktop app | Extension in your VS Code | Any terminal, local or over SSH |
| Firmware code | Built-in editor with language services | Your VS Code editor and extensions | Your own editor; the agent edits the files |
| Schematic and PCB | Edit | View | Agent reads it |
| Build and flash | Firmware workspace | Flash Monitor | BUILD panel |
| Debug the board | Debug workspace | Flash Monitor | DEBUG panel |
| Scripts and CI | — | VS Code tasks | JSON commands |
| Agent, modes and approvals |
Mix them on one project
The project lives in its folder, so every tool opens the same one and the agent works from the same project context.
Design the board in Flash IDE, write the firmware in VS Code, and run Flash CLI over SSH on the lab machine or in CI.
